Born in Pasadena, California in 1910, Harriet Doerr attended Smith College in 1927 but received her B.A. in history in 1977 from Stanford University, where she was subsequently a Stegner Fellow in the Creative Writing Program. She has received the Transatlantic Review Henfield Foundation Award, a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, the American Book Award in 1984 for "Stones for Ibarra", as well as an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She died in 2002 at the age of 92.
