Goddard is a master of the plot twist; some have compared his suspense novels to Daphne Du Maurier's. I would advise starting with Into the Blue (1991) because that novel introduces one of Goddard's most sympathetic characters, Harry Barnett. Harry could be voted "The Fictional Character You'd Be Most Likely to Share a Beer With"; he's a congenial Everyman who has a talent for getting himself into the most terrible trouble. In addition to Harry's appeal, Into the Blue is set in Greece and Goddard's descriptions are wonderfully compelling.
All of Goddard's novel explore some aspect of the past haunting the present, so many of his novels could be considered historical mysteries.
