"The Bloody Chamber and Other Adult Tales" offers the essence of Angela Carter: beautifully written, dark, adult retellings of fairy tales with all the sexual tension brought to the surface. The title story is based on the Bluebeard tale. The collection also includes "The Company of Wolves," the basis for the Neil Jordan film.

I just read my first Angela Carter--"The Magic Toyshop." It was very much as LilyB describes her work (above) and completely enthralling. I will certainly read more, so this must be a good place to start.
