If you're an adult... You could try the 'Collected Short Stories of Roald Dahl' I think these best display his talent for telling a good story. Short stories are a quick accessible way of deciding whether an author suits you.
If you're a child...I think The Witches is a good place to start.

Roald Dahl's short stories are twisted, suspenseful, and completely enthralling. Some are actually pretty well-known so you might recognize a few.

In terms of his children's books, I firmly believe they can resonate with adults. Most people have heard of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by now, but his novels about the bookish intelligent Matilda and the loveable BFG are his finest, in my opinion. For children, I hardly shift my recommendations except to include James and the Giant Peach.

Switch Bitch, hands down. I have gone through so many copies of that book "lending" it out to friends. It's four semi-linked short stories. If you like macabre humor, this volume will get you hooked on Dahl. Plus, you can probably read it in a day, if not a sitting.
