Friedrich von Schiller is one of the leading figures in eighteenth-century German literature. Most famous for his dramatic works - 'The Robbers', 'Mary Stuart' and 'William Tell' - he also produced poems, criticisms and historical narratives, and collaborated with Goethe on a number of ballads. His writing had considerable influence over many European authors, notably Coleridge who composed a connet in his honour.
