Categorization is odious. There is tremendous overlap among genres. These pigeonholes are offered only as a convenience.

Here is VERY thorough guide to the series, created by a knowledgeable fan:
http://home.att.net/~RACapowski/index.htm . Rebecca Capowski, who created it, says:

DO NOT start with the very latest titles. Fans agree that "the writing is weak and the mysteries nonexistent." The faithful read them out of loyalty and to follow the main characters' lives.

THE CAT WHO is really TWO series. The first is set in the big city, has stronger mysteries, and follows Qwill's reporting on a major newspaper. The cast changes from book to book, depending on his beat. The second series has a small-town setting; Qwill has mellowed, and there is a cast of regular characters.

If you'd prefer the first series, start with THE CAT WHO COULD READ BACKWARDS; it is the best of the series. If you'd prefer the second series, try THE CAT WHO SNIFFED GLUE or THE CAT WHO WASN'T THERE.
