Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta, India in 1956. He was educated at St. Stephens College (Dehli), St. Edmund Hall (Oxford), and the Faculty of Arts, University of Alexandria.
He is the author of fiction, essays, and a biography. His prize-winning works include The Circle of Reason (Prix Medici Etranger), The Shadow Lines (Sahitya Akademie Award), The Calcutta Chromosome (Arthur C. Clarke Award for 1997), The Glass Palace (Grand Prize for fiction at the Frankfurt International e-book awards in 2001).
The author lives in Brooklyn, New York (USA), with his wife and children.
