I thought this was terrific story with a solid cast of characters, all flawed in some way, but likeable. As the author spent time in Viet Nam as an army nurse herself, she offers an intriguing insider's view to this world, with just the right amount of detail. In Soldier on the Porch, Pepper is struggling with personal problems that may cost her job. Being Pepper, this doesn't stop her nosing into the death of an elderly patient at the veteran's hospital where she works. Their lives are further disrupted as a dark secret from the war returns to haunt Avivah and threaten her life and that of her friends.
